Demonstration of Energy-Efficient Developments (DEED) Awards, American Public Power Association, USA

The Demonstration of Energy-Efficient Developments (DEED) program was established in 1980 by the American Public Power Association. The purpose of this research, development and demonstration program is to sponsor and conduct activities related to energy innovation, improving efficiencies and lowering the cost of providing energy services to the customers of publicly owned electric utilities.
The DEED program offers funding for projects that will develop and demonstrate new technologies and techniques. Funding for DEED-sponsored projects comes in the form of grants to DEED member utilities, scholarships to university students studying in energy-related disciplines, and joint projects with APPA committees as well as funding for technical design projects conducted by students.
APPA is the national service organization for community-owned, not-for-profit electric utilities.

CRITERIA FOR TECHNICAL DESIGN PROJECT AWARD:
DEED technical design projects are intended to promote the involvement of students studying in energy-related disciplines in the public power industry. Successful applicants are expected to complete a technical design project and submit a final report on the project, describing activities, cost, bibliography, achievements, problems, results, and recommendations. A two-page summary abstract is also required. In addition, the student(s) will travel to the next APPA Engineering & Operations Technical Conference to present their project to the conference.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS:
Only students studying in energy-related disciplines from accredited colleges or universities are eligible for technical design project funding. Applicants will not be discriminated against on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, or citizenship.

NUMBER OF AWARDS GIVEN PER YEAR: 1
One technical design project will be awarded each calendar year.

AMOUNT OF EACH AWARD: $5,000, PLUS TRAVEL EXPENSES (NO MORE THAN $3,000)
Funding may be split among students collaborating on a single project. If the funding will be used by a team of students, one person must be designated as the point of contact for all correspondence and payments. One-third of funds will be withheld until satisfactory completion of the project.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:
In evaluating technical design project applications, DEED Directors shall give due preference to these criteria:
broad applicability of benefits to public power systems;major in an academic field related to the electric power or energy service industries;superior academic performance;generalizable methodologies; andpromotion of energy efficiency.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE DEED TECHNICAL DESIGN PROJECT APPLICATION FORM:
Complete the information on the DEED Technical Design Project Application coversheet.Answer the seven application questions on additional pages. These pages should be attached to the cover sheet. The length of the application should be no longer than seven pages including the cover sheet, single-spaced, with one-inch margins.Submit original signatures of student(s) and school official as well as other information requested in Required Signatures section.Send two copies of the application, including cover sheet and signature page (one with original signature) to the DEED Administrator at APPA by the established deadline (see address below).Send a copy of the application to the DEED Director representing the region where the sponsoring DEED member is located. FUNDING AWARDS:
The DEED Board of Directors, which makes the funding awards, meets in conjunction with APPA’s Engineering and Operations Technical Conference (usually in March) and six months later in September or October.
