Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application: PhD position in experimental nuclear physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Starting date: spring 2012.
Research area: applied nuclear physics
Project: The nuclear reactions group http://www.physics.uu.se/tk/en/content/nuclear-reaction-research-group is looking for a PhD student within the research field of nuclear data, especially neutron-induced nuclear reactions. The group is part of the division of applied nuclear physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. We are currently constructing a neutron source for the IGISOL facility at the University of Jyväskylä, for precision measurements of fission yields.
The PhD student will participate in planning and performing measurement campaigns at IGISOL. The neutron source will be installed during 2012. It will then be used for precision measurements of the isotopic yields from neutron-induced fission for various actinides with IGISOL and JYFLTRAP. The measured data will be used for improving model codes for the nuclear fission process.
The work will be conducted from Sweden with multiple travels to Finland. The candidate will be involved in practical work in the laboratory, perform data analysis and computer simulations, and participate in model development.
We are searching for an excellent, highly motivated candidate with good knowledge of nuclear physics. The candidate should have a keen interest in the development of innovative experimental methods and data analysis tools.
Qualifications: A master degree or similar that must be finished at the latest in January 2012. Good grades from undergraduate courses are meritorious. Good oral and written proficiency in English and ability to work both independently and in groups is meritorious.
Your application should contain a statement of research interest, a CV, copies of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of your Master thesis (or a draft thereof), published articles or other relevant material (if applicable) to the address below. Names of persons who can be contacted for reference and/or letter(s) of recommendation should be included.
The PhD position is funded for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years including department duties at a level of at most 20 % (typically teaching). Further information: http://www.fysast.uu.se.
Rules and regulations for the PhD study programme is found in the Act of Higher Education (Högskoleförordningen 5 kap §§1-7) and in the university rules and regulations (http://regler.uu.se).
